Petersburg, located on the tip of Mitkof Island, is known for its Norwegian heritage, and for harboring one of Alaska's most prosperous fishing fleets. It was named after a Norwegian, peter Buschmann, who built a cannery and sawmill on the north end of the island in 1897.

The population of Petersburg is about 3400, swelling in the summer with seasonal workers. Annual precipitation is about 110 inches.

Mitkof Island is 23 miles long and 16.5 miles wide with access only by air or water. It is in the Tongass national forest, which is a great place for hiking, kayaking, camping and fishing, with access to many forest service cabins. Nearby Frederick sound offers opportunities for whale watching and access to Leconte Glacier, the southernmost active tidewater glacier in North America.
