Alaska's capital city, Juneau is nestled among jagged peaks and located in the heart of Alaska's inside passage on the Gastineau Channel. The area was originally settled by the Tlingit people who made S.E. Alaska home after crossing the Bering land bridge some 13,000 years ago. Named after Joe Juneau, one of the men who discovered gold in the area in 1880, Juneau has been the capital city of Alaska since it was moved from Sitka in 1902. Juneau is the third largest city in Alaska and the hub of business for the panhandle. Although no roads lead to or from Juneau it is still easily accessible by plane or boat.
Known for its beauty Juneau offers great outdoor activities. While in the area you can drive to the Mendenhall Glacier which descends from the Juneau ice fields; great thick sheets of ice that rest atop steep craggy mountains, totaling about 1500 square miles in area and the source of 38 separate glaciers. If fishing for trophy size salmon or halibut is not your cup of tea you might want to take a ride on the Mt. Roberts Tramway and see the sites from 1800 feet above sea level. Juneau also has a large artisan community and is known worldwide for their native carving and other artwork.
