Various communities of Hlinkwaan, and Sukkwaan came together in the fall of 1911 as a people. We did not travel during the harsher months, but made the journey in hopes of a better education for the descendants of these first people. Originally, all Haida ancestry can be traced to Haisa Gwaii, of the Queen Charlote Islands, British Columbia.
Hydaburg is home to the warriors elementary and high school. The governing bodies are the City, Haida Corporation, and H.C.A./Haida Nation (Tribe).
Hydaburg was largely a commercial fishing community in the past. Though it is still a large portion of the economy, it is no longer strictly dependent on the fishing industry. The community boasts a number of very talented people. There are many traditional carvers of cedar, alder, and metal. We have many traditional cedar bark weavers. It is an art form growing within the community every day. The historical totem park contains a legacy of Haida carvers.
