Prince of Wales Island is located in southern southeast Alaska. The island is the third largest in the United States next to the big island of Hawaii and Kodiak Island.

The closest land to the south is British Columbia, Canada. Beyond some smaller outlying islands to the west lies the open Pacific Ocean. Prince of Wales is approximately

140 miles long from north to south and averages about 30 miles wide from east to west. Alaska Airlines flies into Ketchikan from Seattle daily. Ketchikan is approximately 40 miles east of Prince of Wales. Craig is approximately 670 air miles northwest of Seattle. Craig, with a population of about 2,500, is the largest town on the island. The Inter-Island Ferry authority connects to POW Island daily to Ketchikan from the Ferry terminal in Hollis, 30 miles of paved road from Craig. There are also many independent float plane services.

Craig is a natural recreation haven, surrounded by lush rain forests, mountains and islands that are teeming with fish and wildlife. Craig has an active Parks and Recreation Department offering a variety of healthy programs for youth and adults. There is a City gym. The Christopher Thibbodeau Memorial Park has 2 ball fields surrounded by sandy beaches with picnic areas. The Craig Aquatic Center was built in 1997. It has a 25 yard pool, water slide, kiddie�s pool, sauna, hot tub and work out facility. The Craig School district has 5 schools, including an elementary, middle and new high school, an alternative school and a new cyber school that offers an on-line distance learning program.

The trail system in Craig has something for all fitness levels. A lighted and separate bike path connects the new high school to town. The trail continues around Port Bagial to the tip of Graveyard Island. For the more adventurous, there is a trail near Crab Creek that goes to the top of Sunny Hay Mountain.

The Healing Heart Totem Pole welcomes visitor to Craig. Master Carver Stan Marsden created this as a memorial pole for drug free youth with the help of the community.
